August 21: Johnny Carter, a member of the singing groups the Flamingos and The Dells died on this date in 2009.
He was 75 when he died. Both The Flamingos and The Dells have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, making Johnny one of the few multiple inductees.
While best known for their smash hit, "I Only Have Eyes for You" in 1959, The Flamingos single released in 1953, “Golden Teardrops,” has been hailed as “the most perfect-sounding single of all time” and “a legendary masterpiece,” even thought it failed to crack the pop charts. “I’ve Only Got Eyes for You,” was the Flamingos’ biggest hit in 1959.
Joining the Dells in 1960, Carter remained an active member of the group until his death.
